Taj Hotel Employee Ronal d'Mello Dies of Covid-19

Another case of Covid-19 has hit restaurant industry as they lose another gem after Chef Flyod Cardoz on Tuesday.

Ronald D’Mello, employee at the prestigious Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai for almost 40 years was succumbed to death after struggling in the hospital for few days.

Fondly called as Ronnie, he was appointed as captain at the hotels most popular restaurant Wasabi by Morimoto.

He was about to retire by the end of April this year. He was suffering from kidney ailment for the last several years and was under dialysis. When he went for dialysis to Riddi Vinayaka hospital, he got infected by the novel coronavirus.

Restaurant industry veteran and chef Hemant Oberoi who started wasabi during his stint with Taj shared “When we opened Wasabi in 2004, Ronnie was the first I handpicked because it was a prestigious property. For Ronnie, the customer and the hotel mattered the most. 'Guest is God' was his and the team's philosophy," shares Oberoi, who would interact with him daily not just at Wasabi, but at his earlier stints at Zodiac Grill, which opened in 1988, and before that, at Rendezvous.

Restaurateur Gauri Devidayal also shared on instagram by mentioning that Ronnie was a warm, gentle person, an absolute star who made that place special.

Not only this Bollywood celebrities, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor are also very fond of the captain since their childhood days.

Ronald D’Mello was 60 at the time of death and he was from Kemmangundi, in Karkala Taluq. He came to Mumbai when he was 17. On 24 March, he celebrated his 60th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Marita D’mello, who is the Director of Model Co-operative Bank, Mumbai, and two sons. The eldest one is employed in Australia, and the other was staying with him.
