McDonald's to hire 20,000 employees in UK, Ireland; to open 50 stores

QSR chain McDonald’s is planning to hire 20,000 employees in UK and Ireland.

The company is also bullish about its expansion in the region and aims at opening 50 stores reported The Guardian.

The fast food chain is also planning to opening 100 outlets in addition to its current 1,450 restaurants that it operates in the UK and Ireland, where it employs more than 135,000 people.

“It is getting harder and harder to recruit. Attracting the talent will be critical,” shared Paul Pomroy, CEO, McDonald’s UK and Ireland to Sunday Telegraph.

At present, McDonald’s has over 200 franchisees running these restaurants and it also plans to increase the number of franchisees as it expand its wings in the region.

In the U.K. McDonald's currently pays the equivalent $12.36 per hour for those over 21, which is more than that country's living wage. However, recruiting the right talent to the chain for its increased presence there was deemed of particular importance, according to McDonald's, which like other QSRs is facing a huge labor shortage issue in the U.S.

The burger chain is also adding new menu options in the UK including a Grab & Go set breakfast option and testing "more flexible" store layouts.
