Delhi government old excise policy gets six months extension

The Delhi government has announced an extension of its previous excise policy for an additional six months.

The policy will continue to only allow state corporations to sell alcohol within the city, officials said.

The existing excise policy, which is set to expire on March 31, will now be valid until September 30.

Officials have stated that the decision to extend the existing excise policy was made in order to maintain continuity while the Excise Department works on developing a new policy. They have further mentioned that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved the proposal for the extension on Wednesday.

According to sources, the government has instructed the Excise Department to develop a new excise policy as soon as possible.

As per reports, the government has declared that there will be five dry days in the national capital during the next three months. These dry days will be observed due to various occasions, including Mahavir Jayanti on April 4th, Good Friday on April 7th, Eid-ul-Fitr on April 22nd, Buddha Purnima on May 5th, and Eid-ul-Zuha on June 29th.

During the dry days, the sale of liquor will be prohibited to maintain the solemnity and sanctity of these occasions, the officials said.

The Delhi Government had scrapped its Excise Policy 2021-22 and withdrew it on August 31 last year after a CBI probe was recommended by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena into alleged irregularities in its implementation.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly arrested Manish Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister who was also in charge of the Excise Department, for his suspected involvement in the purported liquor scam.
