Food and Beverage industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-growth and high-profitable sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing industry. The food industry, which is currently valued at US$ 39.71 billion, is reckon to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent to US$65.4 billion by 2018. Food and grocery account for around 31 per cent of India’s consumption basket. To provide quality regional speciality products to the doorsteps of consumer, Ramesh founded Delight Foods.

Restaurant.in caught up with Ramesh Krishnamurthy, Founder, Delight Foods to know about his flair for the startup and his entrepreneurial venture.

What was the wisdom that led to the launch of Delight foods?
Despite being a huge industry, there has been a persistent gap in the market for authentic and high quality food products and food ingredients and regional speciality products. I wanted to solve this access problem for such products by curating the finest foods of India under one brand. Hence, I started Delight foods.

Give us a glimpse of your journey so far.
We have had a very exciting time in curating wonderful products from different parts of the country. We, now have over 1200 products, all carefully sourced and over 130 products under our own label. The response from consumers has been most satisfying since our quality and service experience has been well accepted, leading to high level of repeat orders.

What is the USP of your brand?
We offer regional Indian speciality products, sourced from the origin, fresh and pure. All products that we have, offer the best taste.

Who is your target group?
We have a very certain target group in this hugely segregated industry, in particular, the premium consumers who want the best quality food.

Are you planning to open physical stores to penetrate deeper in the market?
No – we do not have any plans as such. To talk about our future prospects, we would be present in omni channel by selling our products within other stores.

What are the sources of your products and what is you distribution blueprint?
We source products with the help of a fairly drawn web of distribution and sourcing.Currently, we are sourcing our finest quality of products from 17 cities in India. The brand delivers all over the country in more than 700 towns.

What is the average bill size?
Around 1000 bucks, which is very high if compared to normal grocery stores. Since we have products varying form sweets, groceries to bakery products, when a consumer enters the store he/she easily finds products, which he/she would love to buy.

What are your expansion plans?
Do you have any plans to take the Indian cuisine, international?Yes, we would love to spread our reach global, but for now, we would like to first focus on the Indian market with value added services of gifting and catering.

Has your experience at Unilever helped you build this brand?
My formative experience at Unilever has been productively relevant – I learnt the business of building brands out of commodities – From the moment I started Delight Foods, I knew how I would scientifically source commodities, to give a great experience to consumers.

How do you deal with logistics challenges in e-commerce?
Our logistics model is very unique and purpose built for our business, with strong IT integration. There are many innovation possibilities, and the ecosystem is ripe to build the new business models.
