FSSAI declares names of 82 labs for testing food samples

Food Safety and Standard Authority of India has nominated 82 laboratories in India for testing food samples on Monday. The central food safety body has taken this step to ensure compliance of standards by various products in the market in the wake of Maggi muddle.

"The FSSAI has notified 82 NABL accredited laboratories for the purposes of carrying out the analysis of food samples taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Rules and Regulations made there under," said the statement on its website.

FSSAI has elected the labs for each of the regions, with Northern region at 28, Western region with 25, Southern region at 24 and the Eastern region with 5 labs.

"The recognition of these laboratories shall be valid from the date of notification in the official gazette till further orders by the FSSAI or the currency of NABL(National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation of the laboratory whichever is earlier,” added the FSSAI statement.

The authority has also asked all state food commissioners to inspect and evaluate all packaged products available in markets across the country in the wake of Maggi controversy.
