Oktoberfest, which has now become a global festival, originated in the city of Munich or München in Bavaria, Germany in 1810. The festival goes on for 16 days culminating on the first Sunday of October. It all started with the celebrations associated with a royal wedding and the trend has carried on for more than 200 years, with a few misses in between due to epidemics and war.
Oktoberfest is now celebrated all over the world in some form or the other; the festivities are mainly centred around consumption of large quantities of Beer. And with India getting more restro-bars and beer culture coming in, the restaurants have got beer on their menus to start celebrating Oktoberfest.
The pioneer was Bengaluru, where Kingfisher started this in 2005. In fact, unlike Munich, where the festivities got preponed to mid-September for want of better weather, in India, October brings some relief from summer and so the beer binges continue all October, or so we believe was the case last year.
And Gurgaon being the hub of world population and expats, has given a higher share to these chains which are serving Beer at their outlets. Some of the restaurants which are offering unlimited beer to set the festive tone are The Beer Cafe, 7 Degree Brauhas, Brewer Street and Anya Hotels & Resorts amongst others.
